Why You Shouldn’t Skip “Getting Ready” Photos

“Hey, Allie, can’t we just skip the getting ready photos?”

I can’t tell you how often I hear this question.

“They’re not that important to us, we don’t need photos of us just getting dressed or of me getting my makeup done, we’re on a bit of a budget, etc. etc.”

If you’re on a budget, I hear you. Even small weddings in the city can be expensive and you have to prioritize somewhere. And even when the budget isn’t an issue, do you really need pictures of you getting dressed?

The answer is… YES! And here’s why — getting ready photos are an integral part of your NYC wedding day.

Easing Into the Day

Having your photographer be there for the getting ready part of the day helps them, you, and everyone in your wedding party have a chance to ease into the day and get used to having a camera around.

It also gives your photographer a chance to build some rapport with your family and friends instead of being some random that just appeared at the ceremony.

Part of Your Story

Your wedding photos are to document the story of your wedding day, and it’s important to capture your WHOLE wedding day. It’s the part where you both get ready to be married - hello!! It sets the scene - the tone of the day, the weather, the details, and who’s there with you before your ceremony. The ceremony is really the middle part. ofthe story, so it needs the context of how you arrived at that moment, at your ceremony, sharing your vows.

Emotional Photos & Candid Moments

Some of the best, super emotional photos come from the time before your ceremony. Including lots of candids moments you won’t want to forget! Your friends bonding, anxious looks across the room, your face when you realize “this is really happening”, taking shots to calm your nerves, a basketball game with the guys to kill some time, the tears when all your emotions surface as the day transitions from morning to afternoon.

Sharing Memories with Your Partner

If you’re sticking to tradition and not seeing each other the morning of the wedding, the getting ready part of the day is one of only times you won’t be together, so it’s good to have that part of your day documented for each other.

Documenting Togetherness

If you choose to skip tradition and get ready together, you’ll obviously want this part documented, since it will be really special.
